I have heard rummors that a few of these reels made their way into your shop just the other day. Can you tell us a little more about the reels? I guess Im looking for line capacity, drag at frespool, price and what class reel would it be?

Yes we did get a few in. The drags are the same as the HX and the HX wide. I spooled up two reels one with 300yd 65lb Izor spectra with a topshot of 40lb mono which was 90 yards long. The other got 350ys 65lb Izor spectra with room for 25yd 40lb mono topper.

Is this a 40# reel or would it make a much better 50# reel? What would be the rod of choice when fishing irons or bait?

Joe,

You could fish up to 60lb line on this reel, it gets 20lbs of drag at strike and like 24lbs at full with good freespool. Bait sticks ang jig sticks can be very different in length. For bait I would go with a 7 foot rod or a 6 1/2. For surface jigs I like to go longer and the yoyo iron I use a bait stick length. I hate to recomend a certian rod for anyone because one rod feels right to one person and another feels right to another. If you can pull on some sticks and see what feels right for you.

sizewise, this sounds like the old pro gear wahoo special. Should be good for speed retrieves.

To match the HX narrow size wise a Trinadad 40 narrow would be about as close as you can get.

Exactly how wide is the spool on this new HXJ Narrow?
(example; my JX's are 1.5 inches across the top of their spools)

Also, since the HX is taller (larger diameter spool),
will it still retrieve just as fast as a JX 6/3?
(even though it's geared a little bit lower)
Does anyone have any "line per crank" specs for Avets?)

Thanx, Dave.

to get a narrow narrow then ther is nothing like that. Jigging mostly but it's going to have spectra. Wahoo, YT, just blue fin bait soaking I think is loose in the wobble under a heavy load, but go with a whippy rod and you'll crank 'em in faster than any other average joe's !!!

I have put my HXJ on a custom 750H and it is my go to yo yo rig while I have my HX for bait on a custom 700H. I have to say the HXJ is an absolutely awsome reel and became my favorite after I used it the very first time.
