looking at purchasing a new rod 5-7 SD,CA trips,
Hypalon versus cork, cork much lighter but all I see is the rubber on board. whats the deal with cork? Cal Star rods of course. |

Well, hypalon is largely a thing of the past. the new EVA grips are as light as cork, much more durable, and come in about 30 colors. Cork and cork tape have their followers, but the new synthetics are really nice, especially on heavier rods.

Actually Hypalon is one of the toughest things out there compared to EVA, I work for an industry that uses PVC, PU etc to make inflatable kayaks and such...in our industry Hypalon is used on very high-end boats such as zodiacs, cost usually is much higher than PVC boats...Hypalon is very strong and UV resistant at least in fabric reinforced form...
here is a link of what I found! (go to the bottom of the article) http://www.sportfishingmag.com/article.jsp?ID=21319 |

I stand by what I said. I have been using EVA on rods for years and most of them still look brand new. I don't drive around in a boat all day with my rods in the holders either. Hypalon for rods (at least in the six catalogs that I have) comes in four colors, is heavy, and ages faster than EVA. I build rods, not Zodiacs-I have no idea what they use, but it is probably reinforced with kevlar fabric and other new goodies.

Cork Tape is all you need for less than 50# sticks. If you damage the hypalon or EVA you are looking at stripping the guides to fix. This is more important if you fish a lot and the rods see a lot of use.
You can redo a cork tape wrap in about 20 min or less once you do it a few times. Not a lot of $$$ to do. AD |

I don't know whats going on with these rods that the grips are falling apart? I have fished and fished, I wonder if I am supposed to have chewed up handles and peeling away cork ? I clean my poles and only use them to fish with, too bad about some going crappy , I have nice poles and I wasn't aware that some get rather junky after awhile.

I like cork tape, AD. There is a new product called Sharkskin that will revolutionize this type of rod. By the way, there are people that can put new grips on from the butt. Crown Vic, if people treated their rods like they treat their reels, they would last for a long time.

The problem with replacing the grips from the butt end is that you usually need to bump up the size of the reel seat and I don't like how that looks. It's also a lot of work. AD |

I build sticks, I like the EVA for grips, lasts a long time and stands up well.
I like Tuna cord or cork tape for deckhand style sticks, the X tube heat shrink also is a great addition for re habibg old grips and new cork tape rods. I don't like Tuna cord over cork tape as it doesn't provide a firm base and will loosten up as the cork degrades, also it will make a fatter grip than you might like. Making Humboldt bay safe for bait one halibut at a time |
