Bait,

I can think of at least two damn fine reasons why it would be a good idea to buy from the Chark...

1. $149.00 versus $199.99 at the place you said you ended up buying from, and

2. Chark'll beat or meet any other price that's legitimately out there for the same product... it's rolling around on the banner for his home page, and I can attest that it's for real, he's done it for me.

How can you not see $149 as a good deal? It's the cheapest out there. $30 to $100 cheaper than anywhere else.

So what was your beef again? Did I miss something? I'm not a rocket scientist, but I am a rocket technician, and it seems pretty clear to me.

Simon,

Lets put it this way so you can understand it better. Maybe I'll understand more too.

Lets say you you bought a Penn Guide series 765XL from Charkbait last week for $149 plus tax after someone at the shop stating "Oh thats a good rod"

One week later Charkbait post this next to the Baja Special on the weekly Specials section of the site.

"-Side note, I've seen a few specials on this great reel paired with a lousy rod for $199. Understand that you'll get less than you paid for. The combo is based on a $20 rod, a piece of s#$% that you'll never want to fish..."

I just want to purchase some of the $20 rods is all so I can have some cheap boat rods.

Big 5 huh?? What you're saying is that you won't honor your advertised rod (PENN 765XL)at the advertised price ($20, a piece of s#$% that I'll never want to fish..)

Maybe because they are worth more then what was stated? Wink

Talk about good business ethics! You must own the shop.

Bait, we have not sold the rod for $149 at the shop. Yes, we do have them there. But, folks are encouraged to look over all the gear and give 'em a pull. In that comparison, while the Penn rod is functional, the Calstar and Seeker products are much more respected by anglers. Look over the gear on the boats (perhaps the 1/2 day boats will have a higher representation of the rod you apparently like so much). Folks make their own minds up. The other rods walk out the door better than 20:1, make that 50:1.

Now lets step back a take a deep breath. We include shipping on the reels...and on our rods. We don't tack on an extra $15 plus "oversize" charges on the sale of the rod. We don't blow smoke up someone's keester and say it's a combo worth $399 either. It's pretty obvious to most of us this post was based on the action of a trol from another shop. Don't need to name names. If you want the combo, I'm happy to sell it for $199, I'll even toss in free shipping. But, I'll still suggest that for me and most other guys, we'd prefer to fish a Calstar or Seeker 'glass stick over the packaged chinese made wanna-be Calstar copy. Further, on the prepackaged combos, you typically don't get the reel's box or accessories, everything is ziptied together and it's older stock. That "special" has been around for a long time. Again, I passed on the combo deal, but I can get 'em. Penn still has 'em as of a week or so ago. We're direct with Penn, don't have to buy through a distributor unless we choose to (unlike the competitor you are namelessly basing your arguement on). You see, we actually pay our bills and have choices from whom we buy... The reels we offer have all been manufactured in '08 and have the additional bearing...

Heck Bait, I'll go one better just for you. Call me personally Monday morning, and I'll sell you a combo for $169 plus $12 shipping to your "Las Vegas" address. Happy now?

Great Stuff,
Mark
p.s. I own this business.

Well Bait it's time to see just how serious you are about the rod and reel.

Mark just stepped up to the line and put his merchandise where his mouth is.

Are you man enough to also step up to the mark and put your money where your mouth is?

Honor would dictate that now you've talked yourself into this deal that you follow through.

Either that or prepare to suck down a bowl of fresh crow complete with feet, beak and feathers.

No, Bait, I don't own the shop-Mark does. I don't even work there. I just was in the garden shop business long enough to know when someone is spreading steer manure. If you do take Charkbait up on their offer-send in a pic of the first fish caught on it. We'd all like to see how you do!

Chark, that's a damn righteous offer! He's a damn fool if he don't take you up on that and we'll know for sure he was a troll and probably isn't even a good fisherman! You rock Chark!

Outstanding offer. I have a bunch of Calstars and Seekers as well as one of the Peen Guide rods. Is it in the same class as the others--No. But it is a fine rod that is a big step up from Penn's previous offerings.IMHO a very good combo for a reasonable price. If you can afford more--get the Calstar 765XL--finest 40lb rod out there. If not, you have a reasonable option will last many seasons.

Well, we never heard from our friend yesterday. Can't say I'm surprised. If it talks like a duck (troll), walks like a duck (troll) and acts like a duck (troll) chances are it is just that.

Since we were the first on the scene, the most copied retailer on the 'net, we do get our share of other dealers who have nothing but envy and resentment towards our success. In eleven years time we've had all sorts of similar things go on, and worse from the standpoint of restraint of competition, dealers telling manufacturers they won't sell a product or support a distributor if they sell to us... Some of these folks have come and gone, some new ones crop up each year, and try to emulate our routine instead of coming up with something innovative. To those folks, I'd suggest worrying about what you are doing and less about what we're doing. We're still here, paying our bills, and trying to do things the right way. We aren't perfect, but we do try, and we do improve each year. Shucks, this was kind of fun to watch. Anyone from SoCal can guess where it came from...very humorous, and too darn predictable!

I guess this thread has run its course. So, we'll put a cap on it and close her.
