I bought one of these recently and have used it a couple of times. first impressions were really good but the last time I used it I tried casting. I'm not the best caster out there but I'm not useless either and the problem I encountered with the SX was not to do with technique. Using 6kg mo moi mono the line repeatedly got caught in the big gap between the spool and the frame. This is a very basic design/manufacturing fault as it simply should not be possible for this to happen. This is not the most expensive reel on the market but they are advertised as high precision engineering- the reel I got was more like a $20.00 knock off .
Can I get a better matched spool? or do I have to ditch the complete reel and start again. I have pics to post if any body wants to see the details of the line catching in the space between frame and spool( and it was definitely not spooled too full as you will see from the pics) Any body got a quick fix? It will cost me more than the reel is worth to send it back so a fix is better than just dumping it. |

I like the SX more at 15# and even 20# lines, but even so you should not be eating the line between the frame and sideplate. Yours is the first report I've encountered with that issue. I am tempted to suggest that the reel is over-filled with mono. Drop off about 1/8th" of line from the lip of the spool. That should cure the issue.
There are a lot of reels on the market, some better and some worse. Avet's machining is top notch in my estimation and an SX at $200 compares well to reels costing double in terms of machining. You would have the same issue on an Accurate. There is no large (jigmaster size) gap between the spool and sideplate. But, if the spool is overfilled and the line diameter is really skinny such as Ande Tournament I'm sure you could eat some line. If you'd like, please do send me some images using one of the links at the bottom of our website's email addresses. Great Stuff! Mark |

Hmmm, did some thinking and perhaps someone else has a thought on this one. Given the very light line, and light drag setting, the nature of a lever drag moving the spool across the frame when engaged, could be that the fix would be to reverse cupping on a belview washer so the reel handles the lighter drag. So often guys do the oposite in order to gain drag capacity. But, with light lines the reverse could be necessary. Any thoughts guys?

TRB,
Post the pics. I'm thinking, without seeing the reel, that it could be related to the line winding tension. If the new reel was spooled tight on a machine, it would loosen up after a few retrieves, especially with a light drag setting. If the line is loose coming off the spool during a cast, you may get enough of a loop to catch the spool. Respooling the reel under full drag pressure would help, if this is the case. Budd |

That's kind of a waste to fish 8lb on an AVET then? Should be using a spinning rod for the really lite stuff?15-30lb is what I would call the range of line recommends.

Crown, if you look at Baron's post it stated that he was using 6kg line, which is close to 15# test, not the 8# you stated. Anyway, I hope he finds out what is wrong, because Avet makes some VERY NICE reels! Good luck!

I'm really suprized to hear of a problem wih line wrap on the SX Reel. I've used mine for 4 years now, with out a single problem. I spool 12# -20# Youzuri mono. I tend to agree with Mark that the reel may be over-filled.
I have 7 Avet reels, they are all first class, I don't think you can buy a better reel for the money. Best Regards, Rick |
