Chark--Are the new JB reels more akin to the accurate boss series/Avet JX/HX or closer to the Internationals/Tiagras/Pro EX.
Any idea on how well they will cast a sardine? How is the new toggle shifter as compared to the more traditional shifers? LT |

To me they really seem like a shrunken International, robust, beefy. They are not as light in weight as the newer Accurates and Avet reels, but they produce more drag. Freespool is as expected, given John's history of performance tuning Penn and shimano reels. So, their casting performance is very good. The spool is heafty, so they are not anchovy casters, but will do well with a sardine. They will really do well in the vertical jigging mode, will also flyline a bait well. Regarding the shifter, it will take a little getting used to, rolling forward or back to engage gears and shift. But, it works well and is easier than the older handle pulling style most of us grew up with from Penn. A push button is easier for most folks to get used to, but this system gets the job done and you'll become accoustomed in a brief amount of time.
In terms of "bang for the buck" the Baker reels look very good. They will take a good fish, will prove reliable pieces with very good support from the factory. John's learned much over the past few years, and he's applying those lessons well. They are truly a custom reel for a "commercial" price. Very realistic in terms of price verses performance. I think strength and drag will prove to be their greatest virtues. Great Stuff! Mark |
