Which rod would you prefer if you were going to vertical jig for 60-80lb tuna other than a shimano? Jigs about 16-24ozs, conventional reel, depth 80-150'
I work/fish out of Pt.Pleasent N.J. and use an 8'or a 6'6" 40 to 80 lb Uglystick . To me the reel is more important . 4/0 or 6/0 with 60 or 80 lb mono works fine as long as the rod has enough backbone . I have an Avet EX 4/0 2 speed that may see some jigging action this season. At night it's a war of attrition and you have to get the jig fish up quickly as they tend to fall off during long battles so a 2 speed would be an advantage .
Plenty of reels from 30s to 50s to Avets,Penns,Aluts, & Everols to try.
All my sticks were trolling rods. I should have that 765 showing up in a couple of days. It'll be my 1st jig stick. Nice info on this forum thanks to all.
Pedro, any specific reason you like mono instead of spectra? I ask cause I don't know squat about jigging, but seems a low stretch main line with a 25' mono topshot would be good.
How about guys, what's your primary line for jigging?
On all my reels with spectra I keep about 100 yards so mono top shot. That way the knott does not go thru the guides while casting and if I get nicked or damaged line close to the jig ot hook I just cut it off and retie and I'm good to go.
100 yards of floro is to much money and with jigging I don't think I need it. Go with a mono that you like and you will be fine. Also you don't have to have spectra strait mono is fine. I use spectra mainly so I only have to replace top shots and not a whole spool of line.
For me straight mono or the 100 yd. mono shooter is good (on my Avet). Braid has no give good for hook sets and feel but thats about all . Mono is more forgiving . .At night/magic hour you can get away with more . I have watched Capt. Mike Bogan catch more tuna jigging with 80 mono and aan 8 oz. hammered diamond than any of the braid guys so far . There is a place for braid in jigging with the butterfly jigs and they do catch but make one mistake and say by by to your 20 dollar jig and a few yards of braid .
