Hey guys, I have an extra Avet EX Narrow single speed laying around. What would it be good for? What kind of set up and for what use could I designate it to? Maybe it's just been a long week, but I am drawing a blank. Thanks!

I will be happy to put it on my new rod, but you would have to send it to TN

IT'S PERFECT IF YOU FISH FOR YELLOWS AT FARNSWORTH, OR SANTA BARBARA, OR LUPE, BENITOS, ITS GOT LOTS OF MUSCLE FOR PULLING UP THOSE PISSED OFF YELLOWS, I'VE GOT MINE ON A CALSTAR 700 XH.. TOO SMALL TO TROLL, OR REALLY CAST OUT THERE, TOO BIG FOR A 40LB. SETUP,, PUT 50LB. MONO ON IT AND GET THOSE BIG ONES...

You didn't mention that the EX4/0 makes an almost perfect reel for Pacific halibut.

After I put this post up, I actually went and dug it out of the closet. I had it wrapped with 50lb just in case of a wfo bite. I had it in my bag, on my bunks many times, the problem was, once the wfo bite happen, I was too busy fishing to go get it and throw it on a rod. Anyway, looks like I will leave it as is, maybe stick on an old Seeker 660H and call it good. If the bite is wfo, then it should be good for whatever jumps on my line.

Beef it up and fish 50lb to 80lb with it. With a little work an EX4/0 is capable of over 28 lbs at strike.

Keta,
Upgrading the EX4/0 drag is not exactly plug'nplay. Did you ever find a 'merican part for the drag plate shim? Budd |

It's hand fitting but anyone that can strip their reel should be able to do it.
The part I'm currently using is Avet item number EXW402-029. This is a .010 shim washer that will fit over the shaft like it was made for it....Oh yea, it's twin is on the crank side of the 4/0 spool. On tight reels I've honed down the shim washer using a micrometer to keep it as parallel as possible, .006 is the thinest I've had to put in. McMaster Carr has shim washers that will work from .002 to well over what's needed. They sell them by the 25 or 100 at $18-$25. Life's Tough, Then You Die |

Thanks, Keta
I'm hoping Alan will post a full tutorial on the EX mods soon. I've been trying to piece together information on the various tweaks, but it's scattered over the net on half a dozen tackle boards as follow-ups to other discussions. I figured there was an off-the-shelf shim available that would work better than Alan's original metric part, but it was never followed up on the original thread on BD or ST. I agree that the mods are not difficult to do...IF...you have all the info in front of you. The difficulty here is that upgrading an Avet drag is quite a bit more complicated than swapping out the drag washers on an old Penn Senator with new HT100s. You can't just wing-it. It's not in the Avet manual. Try taking an EX4/0 to the local reel shop and telling them to upgrade the drag to 30#. The average buyer of an EX is not going to know how to upgrade the drag, so if you have a link to the drag mods, I think it would be helpful to post it. Budd |

Budd,
It would be nice to have all of the Avet 4/0 upgrade information in one place. Alan has most of what I've found as well as input from many others. When I get back from Venice, LA I'll check to see if he has posted what he has. What I've done is eliminated all spool slop (.006 on my narrow reel, less or none on most of the reels I've seen. Zero is best), cut the clearance between drag washers and drag plate (as per Alan), put in heavier drag plate springs and used e-clips rather than the wire clips that came on the reel. I've also installed a few of the "revised" male cams in the older 4/0's. Elimination of spool slop and using the heavier springs and e-clips allowed me to maintain less clearance between the drag parts without alowing them to touch. The new style cam works better for what I want to do with these reels, a Pacific halibut or dropper loop reel for 50/60 and a trolling reel for 80. It also helps me kill time and keep my mind busy. THANK YOU ALAN! Kurt, Did you install the parts I gave you? Was the spacer too tight and did it have to be honed down? My 4/0W that I broke the tap off in came back fixed, $25 plus shipping down and is now stronger than the 4/0N I had when I dropped the parts off. Life's Tough, Then You Die |

I realize you are in Venice, La. Lee....you dawg.
To answer your question, the spacer you gave me worked well, no sanding required. I am able to get 26+# at strike with good free spool and well over 30# at full. I did leave the stock drag cam in. Now I know I can fish 80# and will be buying another one. These reels are sleepers. Good news on your EXW!!! Their customer service has been excellent!!! |
