I'd take the Saltist. Much stronger frame and drags. Spectra is no problem. With spectra you can go with the 40 over the 50 for better handling.

For that matter you can go with the 30. 300 yds of 50# spectra with 30# mono on top.

I could say Newells are kinda out-dated dinosaurs, but I won't, I will just say that I think the Daiwa is a better bang for the buck. Razzer

The Newell will be a lot lighter and works great with 30lb test, for a for 1 to 2 dayer it would be my choice. If your talking 3 to 5 days or longer, the better drags on the Daiwa might be called for.

I'll take the Newell over Saltist.

Now the Saltiga thats worth looking at - if you've got the budget.

The Newell will outcast the Daiwa and has plenty of drag to use with 30 lb. It's my favorite for 1-3 days. Period.

over all Newell lighter 30# is 30#, not 100# on a cow. Newell you can cast all day(weight wise) , You make the choise.

I fished my Saltist 50 on a 5 day last summer and it worked great on the yellowtail. Casting Dines it is middle of the road. Not the long distance but pretty good. The great part is the drag. I added carbontex drags with Cal's drag grease and it pulled more that I needed. For 30 it may be overkill. I used my Penn 555GS and pulled in 30lb yellowtail no problem.

I have both reels spooled with 30lb mono.

The Newell is lighter and will cast an unweighted live bait better.

The Daiwa Saltist seems stronger structurally and the drag is stronger. Would have no issue using it with braid -- can't say the same for the Newell.

The one issue I had with my R338 is the reel mount/stand is "undersized" and would not mount on the rod I wanted (Seeker WC670). I would check the mount on the specific rod to ensure a good fit. Not sure if the reel stand is same between the "R" and "P" models.

Tightlines,

Tom

I've used Newells for over twenty years and I've never seen handles break. The guys in the Newell booth at the Fred Hall Show said it's not possible if the reel is used properly. Can I see a picture and real proof, please? Newells will out perform anything else in their class if used properly.
