Im new to the boards, and hope to hear some expert advice. Im lookin into some new rods and not sure wether to buy seeker or calstar. Im planning my first 5 day trip next year and am curious what are some good rod and reel combos.

I currently have an avet jx, an avet lx and a avet pro 30 all 2 speed. I also have a saltist 40 on a calstar 670c.

I hope you guys can give some advice about rods and maybe a few more reels to round out my quiver.

welcome aboard.

bieng that its your first longrange 5 dayer.

stick with the commons,

1) 30 or 40 jigstick - 800h calstar
2) 30 bait stick - 700m calstar
3) 40 bait stick - 765xl calstar
4) 50 or 60 bottom rig- 765l calstar
5) 80 or 100 troll rig- optional

i would carry a least 2 30,s and 2 40,s.

if your heavy into jigging, then grab 2 jig rods.

charkster has a great selection on blanks.

I really appreciate the input.

I am a young guy and want to make sure i buy quality gear that will last me for a bunch of seasons. Im curious if you have any suggestions on what reels would help round out the gear i have already.

Slojig, I was in your shoes last year. I took my first trip in July on the Excel. Most used rigs were 30 and 40 # gear was the ticket.

I went with one JX 2speed loaded with 40#. I have already acquired a 30# in a Avet MXL on a Seeker 670. I am hoping that Santa brings me a Saltist 40 and will put it on a Blacksteel 6470. I also have a 60# outfit. If I need more than that I will borrow it.

If you want to go with a great group of guys, check out the Sogioka/Stires group that is on the Excel in Mid July. This group took me in like I was an old friend. Didn't know a soul. Great boat, great crew and great friends.

Here is what the Charkster reccomends, a nice solid list of goodies for the Mini Longe Range
4-5 day'ers.

slojig, longranging can become a big challenge, and a great one too.

you can run into fish at any size and species.
i mostly use the all aluminium body/frames , 2 speed a must for bigger fish, and all packed with spectra.

ive caught up to 50 lb albies on a 15lb setup.lol
used a 700xl with a 525 mag, boy was that fun.
now the key purpose on being out on a long range , is to make sure you have everything.

im anal about checking my gears twice or 3 times before i use it to fish.
fresh line is a must , especialy , if your on big fish all day.lol
your gears must be in tip top shape for the big brutes that shows up to the boat and wreak havoc to everyone aboard.

the 5 dayers are really something to look foward to.
guadalupe, cedros, natividad, etc, etc, etc, hold mean bastards s.o.a.b.lol

reels are very important in these cases, and dont hesitate to ask the deckys for help.

there is so much to say, and im already excited for next years adventure.

have fun , and remember to keep your lines tight.

SLOGIG,

Another great source for equiptment reccomendations is to look on the web site of the boat you are going on. Its usually under something like "Equptiment Suggestions".

Here is the link for the EXCEL'S equiptment reccomendations.
