We have an earlier Penn 15KG 2-speed that Cal tuned for us. I thought it would be a decent 60lb reel, but Cal recommended to me to not use line heavier than 50lb. I have thought about selling it, but now I think I am going to keep it. I think that while it might be on the large side, it should be suitable for larger YFT and BFT. I bought a Cal Star 6' RT RS rod for it when I bought the reel. Now I am thinking of a Cal Star 700XH rod for it. What do you guys think about a 15KG 2-speed spooled with 50lb P-Line atop a Cal Star 700XH for Guadalupe tuna?

louie,

Thanks for your help. I had wanted to make our 15KG reel a 60lb reel, but Cal advised against it. I do have a 30 VSW that is our 60lb reel, so I can use our 15KG for 50lb work. I still might sell it and buy a 16VSX, which would be perfect for 50lb fishing, and I can then spool it with Spectra and use it for heavier fish.

After fishing Guadalupe in August a few times, I can see the logic of using 50lb line on a two-speed reel. I can use all the help I can get keeping YFT away from the tax man.

my 30vsw, i had the upgraded 50 lb drags installed.
i use 100 spectra/ 80 mono.

my 16vsx, i use 80 spectra/ 60 mono.

the 15kg will hold up on 60lb.
the taxman will not hesitate on a yft.
the faster you bring it in , the better.

good ole lupe, didnt fish it this year.

XH is a bit heavy for 50lb test. Go with the 700H instead.
As for 50 or 60lb test line-it really matters how much drag you are going to set the reel at. 20lbs of drag is at the very upper end of the 15KG.
If it were me,and it was going to be a dedicated Lupe reel, I would sell the 15KG and go with a lighter wiegt reel that can reach those types of drag settings and whcih are easier to cast.

I agree. I think I will try to sell our 15KG and buy a 16 VSX. I can fish straight fifty with a 16 VSX at Guadalupe and spool heavier line for bigger fish as the need arises.
