my buddy and i went fishing and he loves my accurate b197c, but cant afford one lol, but can afford something in the 200$ range of the daiwa saltist or avet sx. hes not internet capable, and so asked me to look for him.
the avet sx and saltist are both pretty close in price, and in components, other than the saltist seems to have double the drag, plus comes with a clamp. ive never fished either of these, so can someone give me a little push in the right direction?
i know the avets have the cool us made factor, but hes looking for ultra dependable in that 12-20lb line class.

I believe there is a search feature on this website, if so try and run a search on Saltist and or Avet SX.
Not trying to be a smartass but your question is the #1 troll on internet fishing boards. And one has to wonder eventually.

Derek,

Love the 197 - I have 2 - but the SX is a great little reel for the money - pretty dummy proof - I'd suggest that for your friends application over the Saltist.

yeah, i love my 197 too. too bad that he cant afford to chunk out the bucks for one.

im leaning for the sx too, but its nice to have some real world (if you can call the net real world) opinions on what might be a better reel for the application.

mnrd55: nah, i think the biggest troll on the net fishing boards is Gloomis vs: name your brand, or to fish or not fish for bass on beds.
personally i dont think that asking for an opinion on a specific side by side comparison of a specific avet reel to a specific daiwa reel would be considered a 'troll'. ive been on the net since 1990, so im quite familiar with how things go, esp with search button. Wink

The perfect reel for 12-20 is the Penn 525 Mag or Daiwa SLX20. Light spools, disengaging pinion, large strong drags.

I'd go with the Avet SX over the Saltist 30. The Saltist is too large for the smaller lines. It's great for 20-30#.

Avet has the superior quality. My brother loves his. Saltist will work fine, but go for the Avet.

The SX is a great 20# reel and if you get bit by a larger model it will do the job no problem.

Accurate 197 is great reel, but who needs 25# of drag to fish 12-20#? Can you say overkill!

I think you made th right decision. I own a saltist 30 and seems a bit on the heavy side. For 12-20 Mark T beat me to the punch with the Penn mag525. I would like to add an Abu Record 60. But its too late. I think this reel would also be perfect for the 12-20 class.

haha id agree for the most part, but you never know what youre going to hook up with when youre fihsing saltwater. could be a nice 50lb stiper cow, shark, drum or cobia that could spool a lesser reel before you could say captain highliner hehe.

I have the SX 6/4 II speed loaded with 40 lb spectra and a topshot of 30 lb which gives me just over 400 yards I beleive. It has handled fish with no problems in the 30 lb class and these little reels have caught Yellowfin in the 70lb class. They are hard to beat. My question is, Why use a .357 when you can kill it with a BB gun? The MXJ and MXL are similar in size and will hold more line than the SX. Why not an all aluminum frame with stainless steel internals when matched up against its competition you will see and feel the difference. Good luck and good fishing.
