I lost my Calcutta 100 overboard due to a "casting malfunction" and finally have the money to replace this reel. Several people have suggested the Diawa Luna series and frankly they look great. However, does anyone here have experience with these reels? Can they comfortably fish with braided line? Any input is greatly appreciated.
Ihaven't fished spectra on these small reels. I fish fluoro-carbon (seagur invisx) on all my small Diawa Lunas(103, 203, 253, and 300). I fish the local 1/2 day boats in San Diego and I have had some outrages days on the water. I will be using spectra on the new accurate B-197 this year in the kelp bads fishing the big jurk baits fished weedless for the bull Calico Bass. I will be fishing the Daiwa Lunas with the new hollow belly Berkley swimbaits also fished weedless. If you are going to San Clemente for the bass use heavier tackle in the boilers and kelp beds. I am completely sold on these fantastic reels by Daiwa. Also try the Daiwa Inshore Coastal 153. They are great reels. I have 2 Daiwa 153 and I fish them on Loomis drop shot (4-8 lb) and also the Loomis shallow water (6-10 lb). These set ups are very light. You have to finase the fish. You can go with heavier tackle, but My love is light line and light tackle for calico bass, but I have an arsonal of heavier tackle for different locations. I will be going on the Qualifier 105 on their skiff trip and I will be taking my Daiwa Lunas with me. Hope this will help. Good luck. Catch and release for the future generations.
