This is my first post to this forum, and by reading all of the other posts all of you know alot about lever drag reels and fishing is general. I even posted this in the wrong spot so this is the second time writing this. Eeker

I want to thank all of you that responded to questions about lever drag reels in previous posts. It has already helped me greatly.

I just have couple questions and I feel stupid for asking these nooby questions, but I need the help.

I understand that I need to measure the drag at the strike position, but is the strike position right above the free spool(first click) or below full strike(second click).

Also is there a special way to cast the avet reels. Or is the thumb the only thing you need for that?

Thanks in advance for the answers.

There are actually three clicks. The fist is a little bit of drag that you can use for casting or letting your live bait swim freely without too uch backlash. Most think this possition is useless. Use your thumb on the spool to reduce backlash durring a cast as well as letting line out for bait.

The second click is the click you should be concerned with. It is called "strike". This is what you set for the line breaking strength (25-33%). The last click is "full." This is used if you need more that 25-33% of drag. For instance, you might set up strike to be 25% and full will end up being around 30-40%.

BTW, if you are still having problems casting, do a search in google for "magging and Avet". There are lots of tutorials out there for adding mags to your reel that will greatly reduce the backlashes.

Ken, the reel should have the following markings: Free", "bait", "strike", and "full". The strike position would be where the reel drag should be pushed when you are setting the hook on the fish. I usually use circle hooks, so when the fish picks up my bait and starts to swim away, I'll count to 3 before I push the drag lever to the "strike" position, than it's hold on tight as the fight is on. The best way to cast an Avet or any reel is to take it out someplace and practice, practice, practice. Good luck!

When you cast learn to rotate the rod as you cast so that the handle is pointed down this will help the line to spool off. Also dont put your thumb on the line learn to keep it on the side of the spool this will help keep the line from bunching up and causeing backlash (professional over run for you pros). Practice practice practice 25 to 40 yard casts are the bread and butter.

my avet is blue= sad about losing a big one
my avet is silver= Hi-ho-away goes the jig
my avet is gold= It will make a nice anniversary gift 50yrs.
Mark said it was necessary so I bought it.
Are they supposed to make the bait and jigs cast out so far and easy and why do they lock down and really stop a fish thats trying to swim away ? They don't smoke (hot grease) like my NEWELL did when the gears make cracking noises on a 45lb. yellow tail !!!

I just received an Avet SX 5.3:1. It's a nice little reel but one of the reasons I bought it was the advertised Cast control. Having examined the reel it seems to me that I can not adjust the cast control drag of the lever drag independently of the strike drag setting. ie If I want maximum drag on strike I also get a high setting at "bait" and if I want a really free setting at Bait then I can't get a high setting at Strike - Not really any different to my Duel speedy 12 and with more slop in the anti reverse.
Am I missing something here? Have I got this all wrong?
I'm still happy to use the reel but I'll stick to my Abu Rocket for casting in the meantime.
