i know that i ll need 20,30,40, and 50# tackle for this kind of trip but i dont want to spend lots of money for all range of tackle. if i have to choose 2 out of 4 sizes which ones should i buy? now i m considering Newell P338,p344, p440, and p533F. Again i can spend only 2 out of 4 setups cause i need to buy other larger tackles as well. ur all advices would be appreciated

Forget about the 20#. You won't need it on a 7-12 day length trip. Maybe a 332 or 338 for 30# but with any luck won't need that either. A 533 makes a good reel for iron with 50#. Remember, a 440 is just a 533 with jigmaster drags.

HAY GT, WHAT BOAT YOU RIDEN , AND HOW MANY DAYS. AS FOR TACKLE SET UP ANYTHING OVER 7 DAYS YOU MIGHT WANNA CARRY AT LEAST 5-6 RODS MINIMUM. HERE MY BASICS IF IT HELPS YOU. NOW I DONT OWN NEWELL, SO WILL GO BY NUMBERS .
1) TROLL RODS CAN BE PROVIDED BY BOATS. 2) 60 LB SET UP IS A MUST, YOU CAN USE IT FOR A QUITE OF FEW THINGS , SUCH AS- LIGHT TROLL,DROPPERLOOP, FLYLINE BIG BAIT,BOUNCING HEAVY JIGS OFF THE BOTTOM,OR BALOON FISH. 3) 30 LB OUTFIT WILL COVER THE REST, SUCH AS FLYLININ BAIT,THE SLIDE, SHALLOW FISHIN,SMALL IRON THROWN. NOW THIS IS BASED ON IF YOUR ABOARDING THE BOAT WITH 2-3 RODS ONLY. MY ADVISE BRING AT LEAST 5. BACK UPS ARE IMPORTANT. This message has been edited. i m a lil bit confused about 533 and 440 which they share the same body, right? which one has a heavier drag?

533 has stronger drags. The 200/300/400 all have the same drags... the same as in a Penn 500 Jigmaster.

GT--If you are set on Newells, I would go with the 338 and the 533. 338 can do 30 very well and 40 if you swap out the drags. The 533 will fish 40 and 50 for wahoo. I would recommend switching out the drags on both. Standard newell drags have a higher failuer rate.
On a side note, you might want to look at the Penn 113hn instead of the 533. It will not cast as far as the Newell, but has much stronger drags and bigger gears. That reel will do 40-50lb test easy. Also, with all the deals out there on the reel now it is cheaper than the Newell. I have one and am very pleased with it. LT |

Can I ask? What drags do you use? I love my Newells, but I'm always willing to improve.

Penn HT-100's (Jigmaster size) or Smooth drag Carbontex (Jigmaster size) for the 338.
Carbontex for the 533 (Newell 500 size). |

Check out the LR boat suggested tackle list for you boat of choice. They all recommend 6 to 8 rods.
(1) 30# (2) 40# (1) 60# / w/spectra (1) 80# AR w/spectra (1) 100# AR w/spectra (1) 130# AR w/spectra This is a minimum to take as back ups are crtical JIC the "cows" come to the corner. Also depending on the boat ...rentals and loaners are available so instead of laying out lots of $ you can have good quality tackle at significant savings. SDTuna - |
