Hello,

I am getting ready to pick up a new reel. I had my mind set on the Avet HXW. I then noticed that the Pro EX narrow was the same price and it appears to be a better reel.

I will be using the reel for two purposes.

a. Jigging, I have a 4ft 8in Hopper Rod. It is designed for jigging and it has nice flex and incredible pulling power. Despite the short rod you can cast iron pretty far with it especially with a great spooling reel like an Avet.

b. Live Bait/trolling, I'll match it with a nice stout rod that I can use with live bait on the bottom or troll for sails, dorado, tuna and wahoo.

I'll probably go all braid (80lb) with a short fluorocarbon topshot (17-25ft wind-on leader).

Price being equal, which is the best reel for these application?

Thanks

The HX is lighter, same drag capability as the discontinued EX 4/0. The EX was more of a troll style/size reel verses the HX which is more suited to holding all day long, casting, jigging, flylining a bait... The HX is a true 4/0 size while the EX was more of a 20/30 class. If it's troll duty primarily the EX will suffice well, but if it's a mix with some casting/jigging/live bait and some private boat style trolling, I'd opt for the HX.
