I would put a roller top on-the bouncing and tugging of the lure wears the same 3 feet of line over and over as you troll. Put 80 on the reel and put the screws on the albies-brings in the school!
Good luck!

Your rod and reel are just fine. Especially like the 2.8:1 gear ratio of th 114H which will give you good power on the retrieve. Got to agree with Agate D on the roller top install. And if you got ambitious you might also consider a roller stripper. The tip and the strip get the most ware. The rollers minimize it. For line I like 60 Izor XXX as it will test out at 80. 80lb is fine if you are going on trips over 4 days but for 3 dayes and under 60 is a little eaiser to handle.

Everyone has their favorite trolling lures. As do I. The link below describes a hoochie set up that I am particularly fond of. On my last 2 day trip, of the 9 Albacore caught on the troll 6 were caught on the rig below. Its a good place to start.

Suggestion: To elaborate on AgateD's , bring in the school idea....When you hook up on the troll and you think your fish is about 40 feet from the boat, just fight the fish and do not reel it in. This will help bring the school closer to the boat. Try and wait until a couple of your mates hook up before bringing yours to the gaff. Sometimes this procedure will turn the bite into a chaotic, wide full open madhouse. And it will be all your fault. LOL.

For your consederation.

Thanks for the tips, Now the question is should i install the roller top myself or take the rod
to a rod builder. I never removed an old top and put on a different one but i have built a couple of rods before.

You can install the roller tip your self. If its wrapped, remove the thread and heat up the tip and it should pull right off. CAUTION.. be careful that you do not heat up that tip too much as excessive heat will destroy the blank at the tip section. Need to heat it up just enough to soften the tip adhesive, no more. Have a damp rag and apply it to the blank as soon as you pull the tip off.

If standard heat melt tip adhesive was used hot water may loosten it up enough for removal. Might try that first.

Good luck ,
Walt

I use a standard blow dryer, it provides more than enough heat to do the job to remove the old tip, provided it wasn't stuck on there with epoxy.
