will need to transport my gear from Portland to S.D. via plane. What do you guys use to transport your rods? Looking at the SKB rod holder but it is max length of 7'. Anything a little longer available - I wouldnt mind getting a 8' rod - but dont want to have to leave it at home.

Try Looking at one of these Bazuka pro 73"-102" made by Flambeau.
Edit: And Chark has them. http://www.charkbait.com/cs/RodStorage.htm This message has been edited. Last edited by: SoCalAngler, |

Go to Lowe's or Home Depot go down the PVC tubing aisle, find cheapest tubing (about $10) its 6'X 10'' (cut to req. length) 2 end caps about $1 each. then you can use the foam stuff they wrap around pipes (various sizes available)
to wrap around your rods slip em in the tube pack some leftover foamwrap cap pipe seal with ductape Total cost $15 but prepare to pay extra for baggage. And upon return you can use the same tube filled with water and soap to soak your rods and get the sardine scales off e'm. over and over and over till your next trip. You can then put SKB/Charkbait/Bloodydecks/HM Landing/Billfish Assoc. stickers all over it "Learn from the experts, you won't live long enough to figure it all out on your own..." |

Bazookas are ok--not great. I travel from Florida to San Diego for one LR trip a year. After five trips, Bazooka was DOA. The way the top end connects is a real weak point. SKB has one that will accomodate longer rods and seems to be built better.

thanks everyone. I was worried about the bazooka after looking closely at it. Think I'll go with the SKB. Says it hold 7 rods, that should be enough,...

If anyone reading this post wants to go with a PVC rod holder, make sure you drill a small hole in the side to avoid any pressure differentials at 30,000 feet. I believe these are created when you pack the rod at 14 psi (on the ground) and then in the non pressurized cargo bay of a jet, the difference in pressure can break PVC (I hear).

I fly in to San Diego every year. Pack my rods in a bazooka case (all in protective sleeves), Tackle Box (Wooden) goes in a padded aluminum rolling case w/ handle, I put my reels in a carry on and clothes/accessories in a soft bag checked through.
I don't take any rods longer than 6'6". Check your airline for length requirements. I believe there are some restrictions. |

R&R,
Any problem with the reels as carry on? I heard that TSA doesn't like line on the reels? I will be flying this winter for a 10 day adventure and want to carry my reels with me. Thanks for the nfo. SDTuna - |

That's a new one to me SD. I've never had a problem.
TSA will cut locks on anything locked. They always go through my tackle box. Also, leave your rod case and other hard cases at the dock. They will store them for you until your return. This message has been edited. Last edited by: Reel'n Rod, |

No worries on reels with line on them. I travel every year to SD. Never an issue.
