I have been focusing on buying a Penn 16 VSX. Its intended purpose is Guadalupe YFT and maybe bluefin should we be so lucky to run into a school of them again. To my way of thinking, a 16 VSX atop a Cal Star 700XH would be a tremendous outfit for wrenching larger fish. But am I being too hasty? Would a Torque be a better way to go?

I plan on fishing straight 50LB mono. I like the idea of spooling Spectra should the need arise. So if the 16 VSX would not be perfect for this intended purpose, what would be a more advantageous outfit?

BTW, I had given consideration to buying a dedicated 50lb yo yo outfit. But the fact is I'd rather fish YFT than yellowtail, so I have all but completely dismissed such a purchase. It's not that I do not like catching yellowtail, I just prefer catching and eating YFT.

IMO the 16VSX is the way to go for 50lb test. I like a two speed reel in that class. You should look at a Avet HX also for 50lb.

The 700xh is too much stick for 50lb IMO. For 50lb I would look hard at the 700h.

In that line class you don't need a "dedicated" yo yo setup. You can have a yo yo jig/bait/surface iron and use it they you need to or the way you want too fish.

Yes we will be at the Fred Hall show. I hope to see many Charksters at the show come on over and say hi.

Edit: You may also want to look at the 700mh for 50lb.
