Hello,

I just got my new Carbontex drags for Daiwa Saltist from Charbait. I was reading a tutorial/guide on how to change the drags.

Daiwa Drag change quide

In that tutorial he uses a grease that appears to be somewhat silver. I have always used Penn's grease on all non-surf casting reels and Rocket Oil on all surf casting reels.

To the best of my knowledge Cal's is only for drag washers (or is it).

The question is which grease/oil is best for general purpose saltwater fishing reels?

Also, I would love to get my hands that little grease gun used in the tutorial. If anyone knows what it is, I'd love to know.

For gears & sliding surfaces I like Harley-Davidson wheel bearing grease.

Corrosion-X for coating surfaces

Reel-X for ball bearings.

I also like Valvoline synthetic penetrating spray oil if I can't find the other stuff.

P2P,

Alan Tani uses Shimano drag grease to coat the carbon fiber drag washers only. You can also use Cals all purpose (drag) grease. Nothing else. Both are Teflon-based and are only used to waterproof the drag washers, not for lubrication. Do not use oil-based lubricants or grease on the drag washers.

You might also want to check out the Tackle Tutorial board over at SenorTuna:

IMO, it's the Best in the West!

Alan has many tutorials there, including tool, equipment, and parts supplier links.

Many Charkboard contributors are frequent visitors/contributors over at ST.

Myself included.

I've been using the blue marine lube grease for general purpose lube and protection and the Cals grease on the drags themselves.

I'm going to try a tube of this stuff if the local bike shop has some.

Hello,

Thanks for all the great post.

Bud: I posted that tutorial page in Delicious immediately. Great page, thanks. I really like the one on "tools of the trade". I am finishing a dissertation and once I do its all things fishing. I have a rod wrapper thats gathering dust, tons of flies I want to tie and I really want to learn how to repair reels.

Walt and Fishslayer: I never thought of checking Amazon or Harborfreight, even though I am a customer of both. The needles are just what I wanted.

Janz and SoCal: I had totally forgotten about the Shimano grease and especially CorrosionX.

I did order some lithium grease.

I got that same grease gun that Alan uses at Home Depot. I got the blue Yamaha grease at a motorcycle/jetski shop.

I'm gonna guess that most of the blue greases are similar. I've used a few different kinds. I just happened to have a tub of H-D grease around from my wrenchin' days. Big Grin

I tried regular brown auto grease once & it just made an awful mess. Turned into a solid cake & was a bee-yatch to get out of the nooks & crannies.

Big mistake, some greases can be incompatible and I always clean all of the old grease before changing grease types.

I have a can of Teflon packing grease that is formulated for steam turbine packing (high temp carbon/graphite packing that runs in excess of 400 degreed F) that is far superior to any reel drag grease but it's very expensive (KPC bought it for me, I'm going to Cal's when I run out. Yamaha grease is good for bearings and gears. Spool bearings get oiled with light synthetic oil.

Jan,
Would you be interested in shipping some of the bicycle grease to KF for me? I'll PM you about it on HATC.

The only general purpose grease I could find at local sporting goods stores was RIG, guess no use that?
