i have a newell s229 5 i purchased maybe 8yrs ago matched with a lami triflex 6ft 6 med heavy .used twice. i fish long island waters in the north east.whats the biggest fish thats ideal for this setup and how good is this reel supposed to be.
I think a better way to look at it is to recognized that the Newell 2xx series reels were meant to be fished with 20# line. 30# works OK too. But the size of the fish you catch will be constrained by the line and drag the reel is capable of fishing.
Perfectly good reel which casts well. The design predates the use of GSP braids; the drag is the same as a Jigmaster (Penn #500). You should be fine for general inshore angling. Don't stuff it with 50 lb braid and take it tuna fishing.
