I have a few Newell questions. First, does anyone have any recommendations for replacement bearings for Newell 200 and 300 series reels. I am looking for something that will give longer casts if possible, since I use these for surf fishing.
Second, does anyone grease their Newell drag washers. I know that pamphlet included in my G and C series Newells says to use them dry, but that was before drag grease got really popular. Also, which type of drag washer do you have, the carbon fiber ones (right side of photo) or the brown smooth ones (left side of photo). In the linked photo, the black ones are the carbon fiber washers that were used up to at 1996. I got the brown ones when I ordered the asme part number from Newell in 1999. I have been told that they went back to the carbon fiber ones since then. Since I ordered a bunch of drag washers back in 1999, should I just use up the brown ones or order new carbon fiber ones? Is there much of a difference between the two types. |

The carbon fiber washers are much, much better -- and you can use Penn HT-100s because they are the exact same size. The size you ant is 006-309. Geasing with Cal's drag grease may make your drag a tiny bit smoother but I doubt many people would notice.

crash,
Here's a link to one of Alan Tani's Newell tutorials on SenorTuna: http://www.senortuna.com/main/showthread.php?t=15029 Alan is a regular contributor to senortuna and several other tackle boards, and has a wealth of information on reel repair and modification. I'm pretty sure he can give you part numbers and order info for the Newell bearings. Budd |

You want a Newell to cast further????
There are laws against crossing two zip code zones per cast. Making Humboldt bay safe for bait one halibut at a time |

I don't expect to get huge difference in distance. I use the 200 series reels for surf fishing and routinely cast them in the 100-120 yard range. I have heard that the ceramic bearings will get you a little more distance, andwas wondering whether anyone had tried them?
Budd, thanks for the link to Alan Tani's thread. I do all of the maintenance on my Newells since they are extremely easy to work on, but the photos are nice. I have also had the pleasure of meeting Alan in person (at one of his reel seminars). A truly nice guy and very knowledgeable. |

Thanks Budd. One of the later posts listed the bearing company (Boca Bearings) that I had heard about for cermic bearings.
They have a neat "bearing finder" for all sorts of stuff including fishing reels. It includes bearings for various models made by Penn, Newell, Avet, ProGear, Shimano, and others. It takes the effort out of finding new bearings. The new ceramic bearings were $38 for a pair ( va $18 for the SS ones). http://www.bocabearings.com/main1.aspx?p=quicksearchkit&cat=5 |
