Guys, when I was making out my wish list for Christmas, I gave my kids a link to Chark's site for an SKB Tackle box, specifically the smaller one. Well, I am not sure where they actually bought it, but they gave me the Big one, the 7200. On Christmas day, of course I was happy as a duck with a june bug. I subsequently bought the rocket launchers from Chark.
I am gearing up for my 1st 5 day trip and as I look at this beast, I am beginning to believe it is too much box for me, especially since I will be shipping it from TN to SD. I either need some reassurance or ideas. One thing I have pondered is that I could offer to trade someone this beast for the smaller box with rocket launchers. I know I would lose on that deal, but so what? Any ideas? For by your words you will be aquitted, and by your words you will be condemned. Matt 12:37 |

You will be very happy with this size box as you can get a great assortment of tackle in there. On a 10 day trip I take a 7200 and a 7100. You can't have to much gear as the size, color, and style of tackle differs daily. Go big and fish hard.
Tight lines and bent rods to you on your next long range trip. |

Keep that 7200! I thought the same thing when I got mine, way too big ... but having that space for all the gear we seem to accumulate really comes in handy - even if you don't fill it up. I use mine on 6-day'ers and it's perfect, with room to spare. It's the right size for 5-6 days, and if you ever move up to longer trips, you'll wish you kept it (and had another!)

If you decide its too big drop me a line we might be able to work something out.

Hey...enjoy the oppportunty to store all the gear you have today and as your journey continues onto a 10 day trip you will be very thankful you have the storage space. one idea is to weigh the box and ship at the best $$$ for you even if you have to send another brown box to maximize weight per box without over charges. If your dead set against the box I am in line behind the other guys for a call or email. SDTuna - |

I know exactly what you mean. Several years ago I bought the mid-size box, and I thought this is great, I can almost hold all of my gear. Then, after several trips, I thought, this sucks, I am carrying almost all of my gear! I went ahead and bought the mini box for the shorter than 3 day trips, and it is perfect. There comes a point where you just carry too much stuff for no reason. Just my two cents! ( and no, I will not trade either of my boxes away - gotta fill them up with goodies!)

Guys, thanks for all of the comments. I posted this same question on another site and so far the results are about 2/3 saying that while the box looks to big now, it won't be long until I think it is too small. Based on all of your input, I am inclined right now to keep it, but of course, the wind could change direction tomorrow!

Quite honestly, the only time they are going to seem to big is when you unload it from your vehicle and make the walk with it on your shoulder down to load the boat, and it seems even longer when you unload it from the boat and have to carry it back to your vehicle. The rest of the time it is exactly the right size, even if you do not use everything in it on one trip.

Take the time to search the various boards about modifying the box bottom.
Most of the boats have a angle iron lip where the boxes go, and your front panel won't open fully to access the trays. You'll need to install some kind of bottom feet or rails to raise it 1/2 to 3/4". Make sure it has a stickt rubber surface to keep it from sliding around also. And pack your weight in the bottom boxes to keep it bottom heavy. You often won't be able to use the rocket launchers without blocking someone elses gear, but on the occasions you can, they're great for lighter tackel. The best thing is when you're in sloppy weather, the box stays dry, where the soft sided systems get soaked. Even with water proofing tent spray, mine takes on water on. Congrats on the top of the line box! |
