Does anyone know if Charbait services reels? Like replace drags or yearly teardowns?

I have 2 newells that were given to me. I need to spruce them up. 229-5 and a 338-5. They are nice an light and i think i want to fish them more if they were service right. If not charkbait then where in the OC area?

Iggy,

You should just give the friendly folks at Charkbait a call and they will let you know. If they don't service Newell reel they will point you in the right direction.

Iggy these reels are so easy to service you ought to learn to do it yourself, Alan Tani has posted several "How to's" on other boards and has done an outstanding job of showing the teardown on a Newell.

Here's the link to Alan Tani's Newell rebuild:

The reels are all basically the same, just different sized gear sets and spools.

This is a link to Chark's reel kits.
Scroll down to Penn Kit for 500:

Thanks for the Links. I went to Charks over the weekend and bought the drags. I'll let you know how it goes. Wish me luck, I already messed up the Penn 155 I had.

I did it!!!! Ya-Ta!!!!!!!

I sucessfully tore apart my Newell 229-5 and rebuilt it with carbontex drags and i think i added a about 3 pounds of drag with an extra fiber drag washer. When I opened it up the drag washers were basicly new without the grease. So i added the grease and lubed everything up. This thing is as good as new! Thanks abunch for the encouraging words and valuable INFO.

I will try the 338-5 sometime this week.

Congratulations!

They are simple, the way I like to take them apart is have a good work area that's well lit that has enough room to take the reel apart and lay it out (I use left to right) in lines exactly as it came out or off the reel then you can just reverse the order for assembly. I like to lay down a newspaper rather than a towell too. I tore down a Shimano fighting star rel once and the itty bitty ball bearing for the star stop fell out un noticed into the nap of the towell.

They say little things are important and I can assure you that they are, at least that single 1/16" dia ball bearing sure was, that drag wouldn't work worth beans without it.

The only other thing I'd suggest is have a good sharp set of screw drivers that properly fit those small screws and keep them put away just for fixing reels and a set of 8" tweezers and a pair of fine point needle nose pliers sure help too.
