I am trying to decide on a reel for the Charkbait RainShadow RCLB 70M 7' rod wrapped by Salty Dawg. It will mainly be a boat rod for fishing rockfish on the central coast in ~100ft depth. Every once in a while we fish for white sea bass but i have other heavier gear if that's asking to much of this setup.
I am looking at the Avets and Truth (Siegler).
This is either too easy or too hard. You need to drop over to our shop and play with some gear, get a feel for what you're getting. Really, you have many very good options, the little SG, Avet's SX and MXJ, Andros 5N...some really good reels to match with that rod.
First, thanks for taking the time to reply. I do believe you steered me in the right direction as far as size. My in-law has a few of the Avet MXLs that i have checked out. I don't really want to go that big if i don't need to. I had been fishing older, big, heavy, Sabres and Penn Senators that were too heavy and quite frankly, overkill.
Lately I have been using a Shimano Trevala TFC69ML paired with a Diawa Lexa 300HS-P that is a super lightweight dream for the blacks and smaller reds (even doubles). I haven't had the pleasure of landing a keeper ling on it yet but I'm sure it would manage.
Andros 5N, now that is a nice looking reel.
I will order the rod now and try to narrow down the reel selection after i have it in hand. Unfortunately being on the central coast is a bit of a drive. I will definitely stop by the shop next time I'm in the neighborhood.

I picked up a Truth SS reel. Unfortunately, the width of the Alps reel seat is too wide for the diameter of the curve on the bottom of the reel and the clamp.
The curved edges of the reel seat is stepped out on each side wider than the actual radius.
What are my options? Different reel? File down the seat on the rod? Buy a different rod?
What reels will actually fit these rods?
Don't worry much about the bend or curve so long as the foot is secured. That's the critical point me thinks, and may end up being the same on most any rod of a similar diameter.
If i put the front reel foot in the seat the rear foot is half an inch or so above the seat, no way to get the lock nut over it. The arc on the bottom of the reel contacts the seat and causes the reel to sit at about a 30 degree angle from being level with the rod.
I think the reel seat is just too wide where it steps out on the sides. Or one could blame the reel. The Truth SS fits fine on the graphite reel seats i tried it on.
I guess it wasn't meant to be. No fault of yours. I am tempted to reduce the diameter of the seat but it's hard for me to do to a brand new rod. I'm also tempted to mill the bottom of the reel but don't want it to affect the warranty.
I might just have to get a new reel for the Rainshadow and a new rod for the Truth.
Just an update for any others who may have fitment issues. The kind folks at Seigler are sending me the rod mount (center reel frame) for a Small Mag reel. Those mounts do not have the bosses for the reel clamp. They said there may be a design changer in the future to make the SS clamp fit the wider reel seats.
For those not so mechanically inclined they will swap it out free of charge if you send it in. Props for a great company with great service.
Great to hear, glad the folks at Truth, whoops, Seigler ran with the ball. Good job!
