Hello everyone....bad day at work today and I need to unwind!
Have not seen much on these forums about the Tiagra reels. As a Noobie I purchased a 50W , 30W and a 20 (all 2 speed versions) thinking I would use them for different set-ups and applications. What are the thoughts of the more experienced long rangers? Are they good reels or should I put them on ebay and cut my loses before they see saltwater? I planned to use the 30W this Saturday if the weather holds but my gut is telling me to stick with my Avet EXW 30/2; both all loaded with 50# mono and would be used with a Calstar 700XH for deep cod jigging (20oz jigs) or bottom fishing.
Bought the Tiagra TI50WLRSA and put it on a custom Calstar GRAPHITER 765H with Aftco big fool rollers. Thought this would be a good 80-100# set up for chunking YFT in the canyons. Paired the Tiagra 30 WLRSA up with a custom rod built with a Super seeker SSCJB65H blank and thought that would be a decent 50-60 lb set up for bottom fishing or cod jigging, although the reel is a bit heavy for jigging.
Don't know what I will use the Tiagra 20 for but had to feed my addiction for gear!
What do you guys think, use em or sell em?
Might buy an Avet Hoo-X if it arrives and sell the Tiagra 30 and/or 20 but I don't know for sure.
Depends how much you can get for 'em. If you can sell them for enough money to replace them with a higher end brand like Avet or Accurate, then go for it. Otherwise I am sure they will treat you just fine. Ask the locals who have actually used these reels for your style of fishing and see what they think.
well they do make the graflight serie 20gld 2speed and the 30gld 2 speed , i hold them all day long no sweat, if weight is your concerned about.my set up on the golds are 50- 135/100 30- 100/80 20- 80/60 , on my graflights im one size down. thats the advantage of owning penns . as for shimano they have,n in grafite i believe there called ( TLD ).
I work/fish out of Pt. Pleseant N.J. and have seen plenty of the Tiagra reels in action . They are nice but there are other reels that are just as good or better . There was one that had drag problems last year and cost us a nice YFT . The TLD's are light but I saw 2 blow up on national television . Avets are starting to show up in good numbers on our Chunking trips . I have the Avet Ex4/0 2 speed , a Penn 30 1 speed , 2 Penn 4/0 Senitors high speeds and one 6/0 Penn Senator. Other than a Mahi and a bait rod that covers about anything that we would incounter except Giant Bluefins . I use a 3/0 Senitor with 40lb braid for Tiles/Seabass/Cod . I use a Diawa 6/1 or a Jigmaster with a speed handle for Cod Jigging .
Well I just sold one of my two Ti20's on ebay and did not get to use the other one last Saturday since I stayed with the calstar 700XH and Avet pro 30/2 all day and the cod bite was red hot! Looks like we will be blown out this weekend but I will get another shot on the 31st! Hope the 20 works out.
Are the reels the new A version? Nonetheless, some consider Tiagras to be the most bulletproof around. No need to sell them and cut your losses. Very fine reels. I also wouldn't say that the Penn or the Avet are technologically superior. I prefer the Penn, but that is more to do with Penn as a company versus Shimano.
Just started saltwater on a regular basis last year and went out of Lynn,MA a few times and Barnstable once to George's banks. I live just south of Boston and have quite a few options north to south.
