I am looking to replace my beat up albackore bag with something new. im looking at a WFO or a SKB tackle box. I will be goin on a 5 dayer or two next year.
I appreciate any input and thank you all in advance.
Slo, I have the big SKB box. If I were doing it again, I think I would go with a softside case. I live in TN and shipping this big box is somewhat difficult. Don't get me wrong, the SKB is built like a tank but the shipping is a challenge. If I weren't shipping it, I would get the SKB. I saw a lot of WFO bags on my trip as well as a bunch of SKB.

Like Outhouse said, the SKB box can be a handful. The big WFO bag will hold everything you need on a 5-8 day, just pack an extra 3700 or three if you need 'em and keep 'em in your stateroom. Just keep what you need on deck. Better for everybody that way.
I fished with a very prominent SoCal fisherperson on a 5 day last year who said she fishes 10-14 day trips out of her Albackore backpack, so it can be done if you don't bring a bunch of stuff you don't really need.
As I said on your first question, I mostly used only 4/0 hooks and floro carbon leader. I took a ton of weights that I never used. I caught one fish on the iron, but I really never fished much with it. I would make sure my knot was properly tied, be first at the bait tank, get a good bait and fling it out and hold on. Once I figured this out, I caught as many as most.
I have nothing invested in the Excel, but you really should consider that Sogioka trip in late July. Most of these guys are medical pros and they are as nice as they can be, plus if you hook yourself, there is a plastic surgeon on board to help. A wonderful group.

I have a Albakore bag that I've used for the last 2-3 years on my annual 8 day trips & it holds all that I need it to hold. Jigs, irons, hooks, weights, flex-rap, pliers, etc. wothout nay problems (although it does weigh a TON). Seems as if the WFO bag is fairly similar and I personally don't see a huge difference in them. Personally I don't think you can go wrong with either, it's all a matter of personal preference. Tight lines!
I know that I didn't invent this but I have a variety of tackle "STORAGE SYSTEMS". I have a huge plastic box 3feet wide x 3feet deep filled with "ALL THE CRAP". Usually when I'm going on a trip I only purchase a few hooks, weights etc. (Stuff that the "3 foot crap box is getting low on , due to lost ,snags or rusty from being used and dulled hooks etc.) I don't waste the used gear, I save it but I always buy new replacement stuff nonetheless. And well, would you like to de-rust and sharpen my old hooks ? Do you see what I mean ? Thats more crap to deal with and what a mess. When a trip comes along ,I get one of my usually soft bags and load up the plastic plano boxes with the "NOW" equipment. (WHat I will use for this trip and only that stuff, )I select from Irons up the a-hole (About 30). They range from light ,heavy, big, small, single or double hooks as well. Trolling for tuna ? Take that tray . If its a couple of days more flourocarbon top shots etc. "Only offshore" flyline / trolling / YO-YO can be a great lite bag trip, (NO FREAKIN" WEIGHTS, THEY BRING ME DOWN EVERY TIME )I enjoy these very much, the less gear the better If you ask me. Have as much gear as you can get, but; only take what is going to work! And with soft bags, you don't need to anchor them down and hog all the tackle space from the others !!!! Think of it like drinking alchohol- Don't mix it up too much and use the good stuff and don't over do it. Those heavy box types are only for 10 or more day limited load trips. Find one and go on it !!!!
