Hey guys, I could sure use some advice on the proper equipment to take on a 1 1/2 day trip I'm taking in a couple of weeks. We're going to be targeting WSB. I've never caught them before. I have some iron in white and other assorted colors and several different sizes of Owner hooks. I don't really know how to rig for the WSB either. we will be fortunate to have Mark Wisch on the trip with us, but I would like to have some info. beforehand. Thanks for whatever you can tell me.
well fishinmama, reelveal is good at that, im pickin up a few advise from him too. ill be headin that way pretty soon my self. ill be fishin catalina, oh and say hello to mark for me.
Mark sure knows all the tricks when it comes to fishing so keep an eye out for what he is doing and make sure to pick his brain.
When targeting the gray ghost I like to use as light of a line as I can get away with. With bait I will use 15-20lb test. I use an egg sinker that slides all the way down to the hook. The weight of the sinker will depend on the current. Also for WSB I use a white Tady iron with the red S on the jig. There two models a larger one with a treble hook and a smaller one with a single hook. I use both depending on current for the size. On the jig I pin on 2 squid and drop it straight down. After hitting the bottom I reel up 2 or 3 cranks and let the rocking of the boat work the jig (for this I like to use 30bl test). Hold on because with this method you will probably get a hard hit by the fish. Last but not least I will use a white banana type lead head and pin on a squid and cast it out as far as I can and let it sink to the bottom. I work this bait back to the boat by bouncing it in. With the bait on the bottom I point my rod at the bait and tighten the line. When the line is tight I lift my pole to almost strait up and crank the reel like three times and then lower my pole and let the squid settle back on the bottom and let it sit there about 5-10 seconds and repeat this all the way back to the boat. Again the size of the lead head will depend on current.
