I have been saltwater fishing in So Cal since I was 7 years old and can cast really well with star drag reels and Avets with mag control. I have a new Accurate DPX2 500N that spins for years but I suck at casting it. It has a mechanical brake but I am finding it really hard to dial it in for a sardine and once that spool gets going it over runs so easy. Given their popularity there must be some tips that would help me cast bait with it. I don't want to have to sell it and buy another Avet but I may have to.

Tackle stores love me.
Fish fear me.

Practice. The catch with a reel which spins like yours does is that your thumb becomes part of the casting equation. No work around for educating your thumb when using a reel with great freespool.

Great Stuff!

Your right! I am going to start spending some time at the local lake practicing for tuna season.

Try casting practice with a old fashioned wooden clothes pin as "bait" It's about the size and weight of a bait fish such as anchovy, and will help with the "feel" of casting a bait.
