Last year I bought a brand new Shimano Calcutta 400B. The first trip I took it on I expierienced a drag issue. While fishing, the drag had backed all the way off. I was told that the drag washer might have been defective. I took it apart with the unhelpful, tiny exploded diagram. I did not feel comfortable taking it apart to the extent neccessary to reach the drag washers without competent instructions. So I reassembled it and left it alone. I took the same reel on another trip a year later and did not notice any more drag problems. I think I have heard of star drags backing off by themselves. Have any of you guys expieienced this problem with Shimano star drags or star drags in general?

My experience is pretty much with older Penn star drags, but the first place I'd look for a "drag backing off by itself" problem would be for drag stack assembled incorrectly. Get the washers out of order and the drag will back off by itself.
