It will easily handle yellows and albacore, with a few qualifications:
1. Make sure that it has an "aluminum" [black] spool, not plastic or steel.
2. Use line of moderate test, say 15 to 25-pounds at most.
3. Replace the drags with Penn HT100, Smooooth Drag, or Carbontex drag set, including stainless metal washers.
4. Understand that even then, the drags will need to be replaced regularly if you are catching many yellow or albies.
The Squidder series is a lot of fun to fish with!
Which one did you get, the 140, 145 or 146?

Thanks Steve, it is a 140. Per the seller it comes with an alumnum spool, the drags and washers I will have to check. I put a max of 26 and got it for less, surprised me when I won. It will mostly be used here for striper and catfish though I would like to use it as as a 20 lb rig for saltwater if I make it there this summer.

great reel, you have there.
i would take care of it , as if it was gold.
the casting is superb and as what steve says.

my question is, ben what lakes are you going to fish the stripers.
that reel will definantly hold up to any stripers or catfish.

big ones as i may say.

Louie, I live in west Texas so any fishing requires some travel. Lake Fairfield is a warm water power plant lake in east Tex, has stocked redfish and catfish, cedar creek and richland chambers are near there and are both very good striper and cat lakes. I am going to oklahoma in a couple of days to fish with friends who are both guides and the catman says he bets 20-30 pound blues will be the norm. My reel wont be here by then but I go there fairly often to see family and friends and I suspect it will get more use then my 6500s.

I also picked up a jigmaster off ebay for a similar price. My interest in conventional reels started when I became interested in heading your way to take an albacore/yt trip. Talking to SoCal fishermen I was quickly told that nothing I had would be up to the task and they are right. How I found your site was pricing equipment and trying to become familiar with the style fishing etc. Being a poor retired navy chief though I knew I was not going to be spending three or four hundred dollars a rig for use once a year, besides there is something about the old penn reels. And being cheap I will get a kick out of catching the same fish with tiger rods and my reels if I am able to do that.

I appreciate your site, prior to coming I do intend to pick up a newell/gs/daiwa caster from the low end and it will be from you folks.

thanks
ben

ben, welcome aboard.

im a plumber at trade, and our economy is not that great either.
i take what i get , i give what i can.lol
the squidder is a good reel.
when i owned my first quidder 140l, i used it to toss plastics and hooked up a nice 60lb bluefin tuna.
i had the reel strapped on 20lb test, GOOD THING IT WAS IZORLINE.
took me a while to bring in the tuna, but the reel did very well.
