Going out at the end of the month of August. I've got a 25# 30# and 40# set up. Now my question is how much will Use a 90J on a short trip like this? Do I want a 30# or a 40 # set up? I have to add, this is my first trip out of San Diego and a little tight on cash. But I will get the set up, I just need a little feed back.

For being on a budget your pretty much set. Take all three of your set ups. Its the minimal but adequate. If you got a 50-60 # rig it would be nice for the troll but You can use a boat rod for the troll if you do not have one. Would suggest fresh line on all your reels and 25 meters each of 15 - 25 - 30 # Fluorocarbon for leader material. You do not always need it if the bite is hot but most of the time it is benificial .

Concerning your Calstar 90J a nice jig stick for the iron, rated for 30 - 60 # so 40 lb would be reasonable. You could possibly attach your present 40 # reel in a pinch or hit the Charkster for a nice new castable reel. Considering price, a Newell 332 or a 338 would cast great and are priced well. Or a Saltist 40, a few bucks more and a nice reel. Reels choice is quite subjective so go fondle a few see what you think.

How much are yor going to use it?? Depends on unperdictable factors. It will be mostly fly lineing bait but that may die and some sort of change up would be necessary. That change up is usually going much deeper and or using lighter line with the bait or slinging the iron. If doable I would definetly have that iron option available. Again, only my opinion offered for your consideration.

Good luck and post up with the details of you adventure. We are all interested.

Walt

I thank you both for the help. I decided on the 609J versus the 90J with either the saltist, sealine or the 332. I think I can fish 30 0r 40 # on it. I'm a light line kind of guy. But as for the reel goes, it all winds down to how much fetty i have when it's time to pick up my rod. Thanks again.
I'll be shure to post with all the details.

I use 25-30# on my 690J. 40# is too much unless you're using it for less stretch and more abrasion resistance. The rod doesn't have enough back for a 'real' 40# stick.

Am I going to need a REAL 40# stick or am I sitting good on a 30# stick?

Got to agree with WreckingBall and MarkT. The reason for the 90J or a good 40 lb stick is when you are near Kelp and or Rocks you need that back bone. IF you cannot turn a big Yellow Tail immediately after hook up you will be dead meat. Thats, "you" will be dead meat not the YT. These fish exert tremendous power if they can get truned away from you. Like MarkT says its a great 25-30 stick that will cave in when used with 40 on a toad. I and others have learned this lesson the HARD way.

I am with you a 100% on the light line attitude and the 690J would be perfect for open water jigging for YT and Albacore but jigging for YT around sturcture requires serious muscle. Another slant on the issue, you can always use 25-30 on the 90J but not 40 or 50 on a 690J.

For your consideration.

o.k. although I go great advise to not go with the 690J I going to go ahead and go with it. I forgot to mention it's the new model with the graghite butt and the glass tip. So do I slap a saltist 40 or a Avet mxl 2speed. All mono or braid with topshot?
