We have a 500L that I bought years ago on the cheap. I have caught many fish with it, but I have always considered it a back-up reel, so it mostly stays in our reel bag. I have never spooled it with anything but 25-30lb line. While it has always caught fish, it does not appear to be as sturdy as "better" reels we own. Could this reel be called into 40lb duty w/o any modification, or is it strictly an albie/yellowtail reel?
Thanks, Tommy We're trying to get ready for the summer season, and we're considering leaving it behind on our five-day RRIII trip. Good idea or no? |

Given the size drags of a 500, I'd consider it a good 30# and down reel. I don't look at them as 40# outfits. For your RRIII trip, you'll definately want a 40# rig, perhaps even a 50# outfit. Take the Jigmaster as your 30# setup. You can also improve the reel quite a bit by adding a new frame. Tiburon makes the upgrade, and it's worthwhile. I have several Jigmasters, two with 99 size frames/spools which are a very comfortable size (a tad narrower). Also, you may wish to improve the drags. Go with Smooth Drags Carbontex or Xtreme Smoothies. You'll like the improvement.

Chark,
Thanks. I have caught only albies and yellowtail with our 500L and, within its limits, it is a decent reel and much better when considering the cost. But I am now assured that it is not a good choice, even as back-up, for YFT. Thanks again, Tommy |
