How would a Baja Special loaded with 50lb perform? How about a Saltist 50 with 50lb?

louie,

Thanks for your help. I checked Chark's tackle shop for line info, but it was no help. About how many yards of 50lb will a reel like a Saltist 50 hold? How many yards is recommended for a yo-yo reel? Seems like heavy line is needed at places like Guadalupe because of rocks.

I do not think I have ever yo-yo'd in my life, but a couple years ago I stood next to a dude on the RRIII while we were anchored at Guadalupe who was doing quite well yo-yoing. I prefer fishing live bait there, but when action slows I'd like to be able to try a technique that might be productive.

What size rod would you recommend for yo-yoing? Would a 6 1/2 Cal Star work? Longer? Shorter?

Thanks, louie,

Tommy

Tommy,

The Saltist 50 will hold a little over 200 yards of strait 50lb mono. If you want or need more line you could always add spectra and a mono top shot for more length.

A 6 1/2' rod would be a good length for a 50lb yoyo stick. If you want a good all around rod a 7' would be my choice.

P.S. If you have any questions you can call us at the tackle store during our open hours and we will be happy to get you the info you need.

If you want to work things out at home instead of asking the experts, Accurate has a line weight configurator online. It's kinda fun. It will tell you how much line each reel can hold. Use a 7' rod at least for yoyo as a short rod is a pain lifting up that high.

Very well. That reel on a rod between 6 and 7 feet is well suited for grinding yo-yo iron, IMO.

WreckinBall, et al,

Thanks for your help. I am still unsure what I am going to do about yo-yo jigging. We only get to Guadalupe once a year in August, so I have to reconcile investing in a dedicated outfit that will see limited use. And more importantly, I am not a huge yellowtail fan. If there is a possibility of catching YFT and a likelihood of catching yellowtail, I would opt for YFT.

I have also been giving considerable thought to buying a Penn 16 VSX, spooling it with straight 50lb mono and using it for Guadalupe tuna. When the bite is slow I could make it work for yo-yo jigging.

A Baja Special will hold 625 yards of 80-pound solid spectra with 10 yards of 50 pound mono topshot
or
275 yards of 80-pound solid spectra plus a 125-yards topshot of 50-pound mono
Adjust the above to your personal needs.

Tommy. I personally use the Saltist 50, loaded with 65 pound Spectra and top'd of with 50 pound mono.

I used this reel on a seeker rod to put the absolute wood to the Yellow's with the yo-yo above and beyond the others onboard on my last long range.

I seriously recommend this reel. But, to further help you out here in this forum. Here is a wee little heads up that you'll use to your advantage.

If ya look to the left side of the page, you'll see everyone's names for here.
Now, underneath their name is their status here.

ANYONE you see with " Pro Staff " under thier name, ya really, really, need to take their advice to heart. They're an intregal part of the Charkbait crew.

Good luck with your decision on which reels.

pigsticker,

My son and I both fish with Saltiga 50's. We have a Saltist 40. Daiwa has a winner with these reels. So we are aold on these reels.

My reservation for a dedicated yo-yo outfit is that we would rather catch tuna than yellowtail. Our order of preference at Guadalupe is YFT, yellowtail on surface iron, yellowtail on 'dines, and if there is no other action but yo-yo, then that's how we'll fish.

I am almost positive that our next reel will be a Penn 16 VSX. With straight 50lb, it should be perfect for Guadalupe YFT, and should the need arise we can spool it with Spectra and be good to go for bigger fish.

Thanks for your help.

I use the Saltiga for Yo-Yo and for tuna at Alijos and the Lupe.

These are all terrain reels.

Good luck this fishing season.

pigsticker,

Thanks for your help. What poundage line do you use on your Saltiga for yo-yo jigging? We usually fish straight 40lb P-Line on ours at the Lupe.

I am still trying to sell my 15KG in order to buy a 16VSX, but so far I haven't had luck. We might just end up keeping it through this season. Since Cal worked it, the reel has been sweet. I almost hate to part with it. I wish it were a true 60lb reel. Had Cal told me before I bought it that it is really a 50lb reel at max, I would have bought the 10KG.

Bent pole and taut lines,

Tommy

On both the 40 and 50, I use 65 lb Izorline spectra and Izorline 40 and 50 pound mono and I just flat tear the fish up. I always come home with limits.
