I am scheduled for my first 5 day trip to the Guadalupe Island area in late October...I'm just curious what can I expect regarding the type of fish species that will "hopefully" be attacking live bait and my lures...This will be my last trip for the year and I am anticipating "good karma." I am working my way up to one of the truly long range trips. 10 plus days...See ya on the BIG WATER!!!!
Mike, Expect to catch yellowfin tuna from 40-80 pounds, with a pretty good chance that some big ones over 100 pounds may be hooked [not necessarily landed]. Also good numbers of 15-40 pound yellowtail; and don't forget the world-record yellowtail of 92 pounds was caught there. There is good calico bass fishing at Guadalupe, but the boats rarely hit it. And of course, most of the Great White Sharks in the northern hemisphere spend part of their year in the vicinity...............
Take some alchohol and some girlie magazines, just in case the fishing is sub par. At least you can still have a good time while you are stuck on a boat.
Just a little hint--use a very short topshot (6') of 40# to 50# floro on top of straight spectra. But very important, use a fairly limber rod for shock absorption so you do not pull hooks.
You will get bit more than anyone on the boat. Oh ya, and look out for Whitey!
