Keta It isn't just Avet, it's all the aluminum reels, the salt is sneaky and it never sleeps it just keps on eating metal, steel, copper, aluminum you name it the salt will eat it away over time no matter what the companies do.
The Avets are nice looking reels, I just don't want to own one for all the aforementioned reasons in this thread. I do dearly love the way a perceived bash of Avet in the form of an innocuous post on some boards brings the protectors of Avet out in droves huffing and puffing to protect the good name of Avet. Then the witch hunt begins in earnest and it gets even funnier. Making Humboldt bay safe for bait one halibut at a time |

JanZ,
For a hick living in Klamath Falls I know a lot about saltwater, corrosion and electrolysis. This is due to my being responsible for maintenance on 16 large metal dock facilities in Alaska, the Alaska Marine Highway System, when I could work. Avet are made out of a structurally strong but corrosion prone aluminum alloy, I don't know what the other manufactures use. This is one of the reasons they corrode. Dissimilar metals, SS screws and drag retainers are another issue. Yup, some of us can be a bit touchy when it comes to bashing the Avet bashers. I try to save my real effort for those that are really bashing and not asking questions or telling us about problems they have with Avet products. If we don't discuss the problems they will not be "fixed". Life's Tough, Then You Die |

There has been legitimate critcism of most reel manufacturers on all of the tackle boards. Avet is unique in the sense that every legitimate criticism has been met with accusations of 'bashing'. There has been just as much criticism, if not more, of Penn, Shimano and Accurate on the tackle boards. And rightly so. If you are paying $100 $200 or more for a saltwater reel, you should expect that it will be able to tolerate saltwater conditions and perform as advertised.
I'm not seeing anything on the boards about Penn 'bashing', or Accurate 'bashing' or Shimano 'bashing'. What I've seen from Penn and Accurate is new products and new processes that directly address and correct problems that were raised on this and other tackle forums. Shimano is apparently not all that concerned with the US market. These companies do, however, keep their websites up to date, and do their best to make technical info available to their customers. Avet, on the other hand, hasn't updated their website in 2 years. Avet has drag cam options available on some of their reels that have never been documented. Avet has a real problem with corrosion on their single drag reels, which they 'fixed' by glueing the drag washers on some of their reels sometime this year (the time and models involved is also undocumented). Personally, I don't think that glueing the drag washers on the Avets is a viable solution to the corrosion problem. I also don't think that a 6 month Easter egg hunt on the tackle forums is a viable alternative to providing Avet's customers with technical information on their website. If you want to call me an 'Avet basher'... Fine. If you see a penny on the floor and want to call it a quarter... Well, that's fine, too. If you think you can take that penny into a store and buy something for 25 cents, I think you may have a problem. Budd |

The one issue I have is with the SX. I've fished a couple of them off my kayak and they can't handle being that close to the water. They start out fine but by the end of the day there is some serious grinding and lack of free spool. I've wrecked a couple calcuttas this way as well. The few reels which have held up surprisingly well have been the Penn 525 and the Daiwa SLX's...

as for your calcuttas (stubs) , turn them in to shimano and they will repair it or replace it free. penn , yes you have to pay for there engineering mistakes, actright well, its paid for (use it), dont worry about it breaking down on you, cant speak for avet ( dont own one).
