Hi Joe,
For backing, I prefer white, uncolord and uncoated Spectra. On the Fluorocarbon, intuitive logic tells me that clear is less visible than colored. However, there are guys who swear by the pink FL. It simply seems to me that if something is basically invisible, why add a tint to make it more visible. I've messed with the colored product, done comparisons in water...clear is less visible. But, again an opinion is just that, and I ain't a 200# tuna looking for a quick meal. GS< MS |

There is a solid reason to stick with the white Spectra like Izor. Read an article a few months back by one of the Spectra line Mfgs. I think it was Tuff Line. The jist of the article made a point about dying Spectra lines different colors. Their testing shows that it reduces line strength by about 7%.
Something to think about. Walt |

ok, i am covinced on white spectra butttt
reading about the color red spectrum being the most invisible to fish, i sortof thought a pink tint to fluorocarbon would not reflect as much as clear. clear wold still have some reflection?joe |

There is more hype than fact out there concerning line visibility. Depending on which line is being promoted depends on which feature will put that world record in your boat. In this case its the feature of having a pink tinted line. I research this type of thing on a regular basis and there is no imperical proof either way concerning the advantage or disadvantage of tinted line. I have used both and have had nice catches on both.
Concerning the color red, it is not the most invisible to fish, they see it just fine. What happens is Red is the first color to be filtered out by water. Depending upon the available light and water clarity, red will loose its color around 12-15 feet below the surface. A lot of people believe that Red dissapears under water causing the line to dissapear along with it. In reality the Red turns to Black, consequently the Pink Tint would turn to a grey tint. A prue Red line would look like a black line about 20 feet under the surface. As a result of a complete absence of objective facts on this matter our decision becomes purely subjective based upon ones own personal experiance. Mark likes the clear , I don't know what I like, (LOL) I use them both. One thing for sure, line manufacture hype cannot be relied upon as a basis for sound judgment. One thought, it may make a difference under sunny skies or cloudy overcast light conditions. You might try swithing if no one is getting bit in a slow bite. Its a good change up to try and break the ultra slow periods. And you may learn somethning in the process. Also keep a sharp eye on the leaders of guys decking fish. It may give you the correct direction for present conditions. As always my opinion for your consideration. Walt This message has been edited. Last edited by: Walt, |

YoZuri states at http://www.yo-zuri.com/Products/ProdLine/HDCarbonFluoro.htm
"Double Your Invisibility with Yo-Zuri HD Fluorocarbon Disappearing Pink. Yo-Zuri HD Carbon is a brand new fluorocarbon leader that maximizes the advantages of fluorocarbon and a Disappearing Pink tint. Fluorocarbon is virtually invisible in the water and red is the first color to disappear in the water column. Pink is the lightest shade of red and as a result disappears the quickest. Fluorocarbon is also only invisible until it gets nicked or scraped up. If this happens, that section of the leader actually lights up from the sunlight. The color pink added to the line helps reduce this problem keeping an anglers invisibility intact. Ultimately the combination of fluorocarbon and the color pink will double your invisibility advantage and increase your chance for hookups! " SDTuna - |

Yes, but isn't that when you trim or change the leader anyway? |

Point well taken but in the heat of the bite or just plain lack of seeing the nick makes a advantage to have the additional color to mix in the color spectrum.
