Penn is touting a two speed Squall. Any info on price, etc?

Comes in 3 sizes [16VS, 30VSW, 50VSW].
Most applicable for west coasters will be the SQL16VS, which provides a nice lower-cost alternative to the 16VSX, and is an excellent 60-pound party boat troller, etc.
Also good for west-coasters, the SQL30VSW is a good all-around troller for those who need more line capacity, generally with long 80-pound topshots.
During the field-test period, one SDLR skipper used this reel extensively for "ballooning" on 100-125 pound grade tuna, and liked it a lot.
The Squalls graphite frames mean lower price and lighter weight, and if you fish pangas etc, you won't get quite as upset if they get the he** beaten out of them.
However, like any graphite-framed model, these are definitely not cow reels.
Mark is much more "in the loop" than I am regarding when these reels will actually arrive, retail price, etc.

We've got 'em on order and expect to see 'em in the fall.

I'm getting word that these are now going out to dealers; hopefully Mark can confirm that he now has them in stock.

I'm thinking Baja pangas-would a 16 work for 40 lb., or should I go to the thirty? or the thirty for 60 lb, or should I use a fifty?

I'm sure the 16II will be fie for 40#. I suspect that will be a great little reel.

If you want to fish 40 pound line, the SQL16VS is more than capable.
The way I have been setting mine up is to just install 400 yards of 80-pound superbraid, then add a topshot of 50 or 60 pound mono, which is usually about 100 yards depending on how full-up the reel needs to be.
If you will be fishing that 40 pound off pangas for general-purpose lure trolling, slow trolling with various live and dead baits, and bottom fishing, the SQL16VS will be perfect.
However, if your 40 pound application will be more casting lures and flylining smaller live baits, possibly consider something a little smaller like a 113HN Baja Special, or even a Fathom FTH30 star drag.
