Yup, 15 day RRIII trip #2. I hadn't planned on this trip, I can only come up with funds for a trip every other year, but I had so much fun this year I just had to do it again. Hopefuly the economy will improve and I can do another in the fall of '10 or winter '11.
Bummer about you not being able to get out this year.
Good for you on the RRIII on trip #2. You will be with one of the most legendary skippers of our time; John Grabowski. I know they talk about Pool & LoPreste, but after your trip you will understand why I say this. If you didn't book this because of him, you stumbled into something really special. Capt. Cates is awesome, but my experience with Grabowski has been nothing short of magical.
This will be my third trip to Hurricane Bank with Capt. Grabowski, my avatar is from the '06 trip. Sometime in the future I'd like to do a 15 day with Capt. Cates, I like the way he fishes too.
Didn't notice the avatar. Holy Cow!!! I also went to the Bank in 06. But it was an 11 day on the AA. We plugged the holds in a day and half. I think there might be more pressure this year on Hurricane because of small fish in Mag Bay area. You might also hit Clarion on your trip. Better chance for a supercow there. Good Luck. I'll look for your report in Late Jan - Early Feb 09!
We hit Clarion twice last year due to the wahoo "problem" at Huricane Bank. I lost a big YFT at the boat and landed a 175+ fishing the island.
The wahoo last year were thick, I got them on kite, chunk, bombs and flylining, several without wire. Nothing big but there were a few in the 50-60 range. I'm taking a 25lb rig this time for playing with the wahoo. We return Feb, 7th and I have a 12 hr drive home, depending on the temperature here I'l probably post a report late the 9th or early on the 10th.

My largest YFT last trip
Approaching Clarion Isl. to check in.
Largest YFT to date, 258lbs caught Jan/Feb '06 This message has been edited. Last edited by: Keta,
I'll be heading out on the RRIII early January. 2009. Is that time of year good to go? This will be my first long range trip. Any advice would be helpful.
The # 1 numero uno thing to do is let the crew of the RRIII tie/complete/adhere/do/ all your connections. They will do it right and allow you to have comptele confidence in your top shot connection.
I have one 225# YFT on the deck because i listened to the crew and did what they told me after they set up mu terminal gear.
2nd most important thing is a positive mental state...It is a trip of a lifetime only if yo allow yourself to smell the breeze, hear the ocean and see the sunrise .
Nice post SD. I have never been on a longer trip but I like to do my own connectionns but given the money and time invested, your words are wise and appreciated. Also, smell the roses along the way!
