An air quality index for Kona, about 40 miles (64 km) northwest of the eruption site, was at "orange" level, meaning sensitive groups, such as older people and those with lung disease, could be affected

an article in usgs.gov says:
"Far away from the volcano, such as along the Kona coast on the Island of Hawaii's west side, aerosol particles dominate vog, but near Kilauea SO2 gas is a major component of vog."
