Don't know about the fishing. I do know that the surf there hits 30 plus feet at times.
Try cass tours.com to see if they offer trips there. |

A buddy of mine just bought a house there last year. He went out once with a local aboard a panga for dorado, yellowtail, and grouper. There was no pier so they had to launch off the beach. I don't know if there is a pier now, but cass tours would have a better idea.

JMR do you have a way I could contact your Friend? The Pangas normally lauch from the beach all over baja, piers are not common, and bring higher costs. I emailed one outfit for info, but haven't gotten a rely in 3 days. That makes me a bit nervous to book a trip. I love Mexico, but doing Business in the internet in Mexico is risky. I have been burnt on a trip that I booked in person. I had to threatewn the guy with bodily harm, and bring along a big tall friend to give me some intimidation help. It was resolved and the money was refunded in cash, without any head stomping.

Todos Santos has great fishing, but the road getting there is kind of long and dusty. Sam, the owner is very friendly and goes out of his way to be helpfull. I would recommend going there, I have never seen real bad seas. Another place you might want to try is Castros down the coast alittle. Better fishing probably.

Buddy, do you have any contact info for fishing down there. The roads don't bother me. I just need som info, and a phone number or two. Most of the Pangueros only have cell numbers, so that would be fine. If not maybe a tackle shop does the booking for them. I usually try and book direct with the Capitan/Panguero.
Thanks Greg |

I just read this. I have a place in Todos Santos, Baja California Sur. Lots of confusion with the town and an offshore surfing island off Ensenada. Almost all the fishing out of town goes off the beach at Punta Lobos. And that is about the only place you would want to take a boat out! Most of the shoreline from Cabo on up is a bonecrushing shorebreak. Next to Punta Lobos is a fairly calm area they take the pangas out from. Can still be pretty hairy though. People I know that fish out of Todos Santos go down and talk to the pangueros the day before to make arrangements. Really doubt they take reservations beforehand. Todos isn't Cabo, yet...

Thanks for the info. I think I'm going to drive up from cabo and check it out. What is thew normal catch?
By the way does anybody know how to get some carts to check ou the bottom around Todos Santos to Cabo, and San Jose Del Cabo? I'm going in September, and would like to get an idea of some of the bottom, so I can better my odds with a big Grouper. Thanks Greg |

It's been several years since I've ventured out that way. Around the island were some kelp beds and all the barracuda you want - no limit in take or size. there we a few sheephead and calicos. Depending on the season yellowtail cruise through.
Out deeper we went for lings and rock cod. Good fishing was had. I still have some of the $2 alum jigs the kids were selling on the docks - worked great for the 'cuda. Some of the pagnas used the bottom of the boat as their bait tank - if you know what I mean. They're usually the same ones that man the ores for lack of a motor. Bring your boots and tip the rower. (I upgraded to the guy with the 25HP outboard). |

Well. I went in search of the Panga fishing in Todos Santos. I found the Pangas are located on the Punta Lobos Beach outside of town and 2.8KN from the Highway.
The fishing was great, just just need to be aware of the differences between chartes there and normal charters. You will be fishing with Commercial Fishermen who are used to Handlines. They know how to fish, and find fish, but not how to operate your tackle. You will need to bring your own. They catch their own bait, which is usually Green Mackerel. We satrted by running off the beach for a good ways, then trolling for Dorado, and Marlin, until the Pelicans, and Frigate birds bothered all of the live trolled mackerel. We then anchored up in 200+ feet of water, and started chunking, and bottom fishing at the same time. The action was fast and furious. We would hook into Cabrilla, red snapper, and yellowtail, and then Dorado would show up next to the boat. Then we would rush to pitch a bait out to them. The Dorado were running from 103 to one bull of about 40#. A few marlin cruised by, but we couldn't pitch a bait fast enough. We filled the icebox, andhad plenty to eat. Now here is the inmoprtant oart. YOU ONLY GET your fish, I reccommend you bring you own cooler or mark them! There was some confusion with the crew and myself over the split, and I got less than my share. Other than that the trip was great. I will be going there again you can book a trip though the La Sirena Guest House in Todos Santos. Their website is: www.lasirenakayaksurf.com Greg Sappington |

Greg,
Happy to hear you had a good trip! I live on the East Cape, but have a small place in Todos Santos. On my way over last week, 9/13 or 9/14, I saw what must have been every charter boat in Cabo just offshore just south of Todos Santos. Were you out around that time? I always wonder what they are into. I fish mostly out of my kayak and haven't been in the water other than to surf on the Pacific side. Can't seem to decide which side to leave the toys on. Tough problem. Rick |
