The trip left Thursday 8/2 and was pretty epic for a day and a half.
I had to gear up with 25lb with fluoro for bluefin and 40lb for tails.

1 stop on a small patty in the AM got 3 yellows for the boat and an
18lber for me on 25lb. Kicked my butt.

2nd stop on a meter mark & jig strike on bluefin. I hooked up on the
slide & broke off in a tangle. By the time I retied the school was
gone. Only 10-15 bluefin that stop.

3rd stop was the mother load of kelp patties. Hungry yellows and dodos
everywhere. Had one chase a bare hook on the surface. Switched to 40lb
and got busy. Boated 5 more yellowtail from 15-20lbs.

When we drifted pretty far from the patty a couple bluefin showed up
at the bow. Went down to 25lb and 2/0 hook and caught my first bluefin
finally!!!!! Not very big but good enough.

We had boat limits of dodos and yellows so we had to chase tuna the
rest of the day. The Searcher was sitting on a school of wide open
40lb yellowfin school. We came down too late and only got one on the
troll. No schools would play. Would have been crazy if we got some.

Final score for me:
7 yellowtail 15-20lbs
1 BFT 15-20lbs

Thanks for the post, nice fishing! Really good to see the fish moving closer now. The overnighters need a good bite to put more guys on their boats. Things have been slow developing, but it's game-on now.

We only had 22 passengers on a 90ft boat and your right the reservations poured in after our good fish count.

My strategy of being one of the first baits in the water each stop worked well for me. It takes a lot of energy standing at attention all day though. When the bite goes stupid good it no longer matters though.
