Good News: Guadalupe Island Is Open Word came from SAC official Ken Franke to Fisherman’s Landing that Guadalupe Island has been opened to permit-bearing sportboats as of 5:30 pm October 13. That is great news to San Diego’s long range fleet, since the island offers good possibilities for yellowfin tuna of 50 to 100 pounds or more. Usually,, the only other location to provide tuna of the large size is Alijos Rocks, another day’s cruise southward from the big island. Great Stuff! Mark

I heard what closed it this time was a San Diego boat with a load of fish way over their limit. Any Comments?

Amazing how rumors get started; here's the straight dope: The reason it was closed was a coincidental close gathering of several fishing boats AND several shark dive boats all together in a small cove [North Cove]. Boats are supposed to be spread out in this Biosphere Zone [the island], and now that it has been clarified as a definite rule, rest assured there will be plenty of space between boats at Guadalupe.

Woops, looks like it is closed again. The rule that will probably be implemented is that a Passport will be required to visit the Biosphere Zone. Pretty much any trip longer than 1.5 days it will eventually be a requirement, so right now is a good time to apply for one if you don't already have it.

Thank you, Steve. If this had been explained instead of "It's kinda hush-hush" the rumor mill wouldn't be grinding.

Ironically, I was at Guadalupe aboard the AA on October 15, the first day it was back open after being closed for several weeks. We were anticipating a great bite, but the wind and current were horrible, and we left after catching only 5 yellowtail in about 6 hours.
