At 44oz and not a two speed what niche does Penn expect to fill? The same price can get a 2-speed Accurate. An Accurate 665H weights half that. After pulling on home guard yellowtail with 40lb and 12 pounds of drag on my last 5 day I am convinced that a 2-speed 40lb is a good idea. Especially after 6 fish in two hours. The new 300LD weighs as much as the 16VSX that I have. Well Penn has some great reels but I think that they made a mistake on this one. Chad Tackle stores love me. Fish fear me.

You might be right. Other anglers might find the cost prohibitive (like I do) for a single speed, but the LD makes more drag than the star drag version and plenty of anglers prefer lever drags. Given the issues that the Accurate reel has at high drag pressures, this might be a better reel, if not a better price. Penn's sure to move some of these units.

A Shimano Torsa 30 goes for $699 and it's a single speed lever drag.

I guess that is a good point. I don't fish Shitmano for Saltwater so I forget about them. I am looking for lighter and stronger like many people who want to fish spectra and smaller reels. I am saving for an Accurate Boss 2-speed. I wonder how well the 300LD casts. They say the gear disengages. I know the star drag models cast awesome. Tackle stores love me. Fish fear me.

I did not hear about issues. Given the reverence toward Accurate that some boards have, I didn't know that there was a problem!

I know a couple of years ago while fishing an 8 day trip, a few of the guys on the trip were having problems with their Accurate reels locking up and giving them problems. I personally don't own any Accurate reels as they are way to costly for my budget and there are quality reels out there that cost a LOT less and will get the job done. This is my take on Accurate reels and I know there are a LOT of guys out there that swear by them and absolutely love them, but I'll take an Avet or a Daiwa anyday! Tight lines and have a GREAT 2008!

No problem. Allow me to restate my point, and I'll try to be clearer. Setting the drag too high at strike can cause a piece in the Accurate lever drag assmebly to round off, which can result in drag failure. It is directly caused by operator error, and I unintentionally made it sound like a problem with the reel. My bad. That I believe the assembly of the TRQ 300LD is more robust and less prone to that operator caused failure is what I should have written.

The Torque TRQ300LD in a single speed version has limited application for our west-coast style of fishing, but at some point in the future the 2-speed version will become available. What the TRQ Lever Drag "system" does is completely eliminate "side-load", no matter how high the drag is set. You also get total freespool even at high settings, due to the extremely innovative "disconnecting drag stack". It is not a "disconnecting pinon gear like the Torque star-drag models [and 525MAG], so casting-wise with equivalent lures and rods, the star-drags are still a little better.
