I was wondering if you could recommend a couple of reels and rods for deep drop wreck fishing 1,000 to 1,500 feet. There's a trip out of Montauk I've been eyeing for years and I may go this time.
Thats some depth we don't get to fish out here after protectionists decided that we fishermen had been responsible for declining deep water fish stocks. Of course that was BS, questionable "science" done during an El Nino when rockfish do indeed move to cooler waters. But, we're stuck with the restrictions, took away what we used to do in the winter. However, this year we have tuna and yellowtail to chase - in the midst of winter!
For your fishing, it's a matter of line test and capacity needed. Let us know the test line and we can begin narrowing the playing field. Are you going for tilefish?
If you want to fish non-electric, consider an Avet HXW. It holds enough 50# or 65# braid and has a good gear ratio for deep drop. Some people use them for black cod up here in Alaska and fish 1200 feet deep. Not fun, but it works.
You're looking at the same Viking Fleet tile trips as I am, I think. I had a Wahoo Special serviced, the handle moved for maximum length, and the reel spooled w/ 700 yards 65 lb. solid braid. Cranking up and down is still going to be a lot of work, but electric reels are barred, AFAIK, on some Viking Fleet tile trips. Check their website for details.
In the same size/style category under discussion [2-speed wide 4/0] also consider the Penn Fathom FTH60LD2. Only 27 ounces, 40 pounds max drag 1-piece aluminum frame. I'll let Mark talk about retail price points! This message has been edited. Last edited by: Steve Carson,
