After 50 years of fishing them. I switched to left hand models. No changing hands after cast. Throwing jigs and swimbaits you also get a stronger hook set. For tarpon it makes a big difference.
I was kind of thinking along the same lines. I started out with my grandfather's reels as a kid, and he was a switch hitter so to speak. I had both types of reel and grew comfortable fishing them. Time moves on, switched back to the right hand retrieve. Last year I decided to get back into bass fishing a bit (have a young son and need to get him properly focused in life). So, I gave it some consideration but ended up with the righty baitcasters since that's more consistent with my saltwater gear. When all is said and done, it's about your style of fishing and what you find best to use. Both have their merits...but when I add another reel to the mix I also might go lefty for one of 'em. That should keep the kid confused enough that he finds and uses what works for him, too.
